History
The Cultural Centre was incorporated in Ontario, July 16, 1975 under the name “Le Chenail Inc.” in the wake of the first francophone cultural centers in Ontario. It was also an active artistic promoter on the sociocultural scene. It was recognized as a charitable organization on the 26th of June 1987.

The program took a decidedly artistic and cultural turn under the excellent leadership and general artistic direction of André Villeneuve a few years after its foundation. The impact of arts programming was once crucial to the Hawkesbury population since “Le Chenail” l gave rise to exceptional artistic performances.

Interestingly, the “Le Chenail Cultural Centre” never lived in a building of its own. Over the years, it has changed location, and has recently been moved back to its original setting at the house on the island namely, “Maison de l’Ile”, an 1835 historic building in the Confederation Park on the Snye Island. The Hawkesbury municipality has granted a ten year lease to the cultural center in this historical building of high visibility and an important factor of local identity.
